Listening to this "1981-1998" will reveal why Dead Can Dance had such a huge influence and why their music continues to live on today. Starting with "Frontier," the first improvised number by Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry, Dead Can Dance opened the door to a world that was both archaic and new, and terrifyingly brilliant.

"1981-1998" features selections from their seven original albums, live recordings, and various other tracks. Their music, which brings bliss and spiritual liberation while changing musical styles, is as gentle as Gregorian chant and as passionate as Persian Islamic practitioners. Dead Can Dance has always had two sides. Perry's low voice, a combination of Jim Morrison and Sinatra, and the mysterious and passionate Gerrard's Middle Eastern, Bulgarian, and Gregorian-style vocals created an imagination that transcended cultures. Perry's synths, strings, bouzouki, hurdy-gurdy, and Gerrard's Chinese zither envelop Gerrard's singing. Yet, the music of Dead Can Dance still resonates in a contemporary way.

This box set covers the duo's career—from their start in Australia to their last album, "Spiritchaser," which was influenced by African and Indian music. The masterpieces are "The Lotus Eaters" and "Byler," the last works recorded just before their breakup. Until now, only Gerrard's version was included in "The Echoes Living Room Concerts Volume 2," but this time, you can hear their overwhelming performance together. Dead Can Dance concerts were like religious experiences, and you can feel that atmosphere in the live film "Toward The Within," included on the third DVD.
