In 1970, a joke circulated among college students that Mickey Mouse wore a Spiro Agnew watch, implying that Micky Mouse a cartoon character, was making fun of Spiro Agnew, a fellow cartoon character. Dr. Hale E. Dougherty, a California physician, had a Spiro Agnew watch designed to sell. The design became such a hit that the watches became a cultural phenomenon.
