This antique engraving depicts a young girl dressed in a Victorian costume. The engraving is a black and white rendition of a painting by Thomas Uwins (1782–1857) title "Le Chapeau de Brigand". The engraving was published by the D. Appleton Co. of New York circa 1850. It is a beautiful, detailed engraving.

The story of the painting involves a young girl sitting for a portrait. When the artist was temporarily called away, she amused herself by dressing up in costumes found in the studio. The artist decided to paint the young girl dressed in the costumes.
