Plique-à-Jour
When the art of translucent cloisonné was developed in the fourteenth century, the French called it plique-a-jour or "web of daylight". It is a time consuming process of enameling similar to cloisonne work except that cloisons are not attached to a base. After the transparent enamel is laid the base is removed and the finished work resembles stained glass.
Today the art of plique-a-jour has been revived in China, where the finest work is done. Each piece of plique-a-jour is painstakingly handcrafted by skilled artisans. Because each is an individual work of art, small variations in color will occur.
