This is a gorgeous hand painted decorative plate by Japanese manufacturer Fukagawa Porcelain. Part of their Warabe No Haiku Series, by artist Shunsuke Suetomi, each limited edition collectible plate is signed and numbered. Shunsuke Suetomi is known for creating works of art that use white space to create a "Sea of Whiteness" which he felt aligned with the principles of Zen Buddhism.
Made in 1978, this 10 1/4" plate is second in the series and titled "Child of Straw." In this piece of Japanese art, two brothers are watching their sister playing and giving love to her straw doll. Each plate has a haiku poetry describing the action on the plate. The haiku on this plate is 'Older sister, your child is made of straw. Why groom him like a brother?" The artist makes a lasting tribute to maternal love
