Vintage Japanese Satsuma-style ginger jar with lid featuring a hand-painted bird with raised Moriage-type details & gold highlights.
Ginger jars were used to store & spices, herbs, & oils, including ginger, which gave them their name.
The jar features a hand-painted design of birds & floral, often seen in Satsuma ginger jars. Satsuma ware is known for its intricate designs & color palettes. This type of Japanese pottery originated in the late 16th or early 17th century in the Satsuma region.
Raised detail is characteristic of Moriage, a decorative technique where slip is applied to create a three-dimensional effect.
Measures 5.5" tall at lid & 2.5" wide at base. No chips, cracks, nicks or repairs.
